Soveriegn Hill

This winter, families are invited to take part in a very merry series of activities on offer at Sovereign Hill as Victoria’s most treasured family tourist attraction celebrates Christmas in July.

Every day from June 30 – July 15 2012, Sovereign Hill will host a range of fun festive activities including gingerbread workshops, jolly shadow puppets, yuletide plays and Christmas story readings.

In addition to the Christmas-inspired events on offer, all of Sovereign Hill’s regular activities will also be available right throughout the school holidays.

Favourite indoor children’s activities include colourful candle dipping, bowling at the 1850s bowling saloon, witnessing the fascinating $140,000 gold pour, 1850s-style shopping, visiting the animals and of course, panning for real gold!

GINGERBREAD CHRISTMAS COOKIE DECORATING

This winter, Sovereign Hill Bakers will help visitors shape, decorate and bake their own Christmas gingerbread tree to take home (or enjoy on the spot!). The fun, cookie making workshop includes a festive colouring activity while the gingerbread is baking.

AT THE VICTORIA THEATRE

Live entertainment was popular on the goldfields. Sovereign Hill’s beautiful Victoria Theatre offers a full daily program of music and theatre.

1. SHADOW PUPPETS – A VISIT FROM ST NICHOLAS

Come on a journey to hear a timeless story told through poetry and stunning Victorian shadow puppets. This tale of a visit by a “jolly old elf” will delight young children – they may even learn the names of the reindeers. Daily throughout the holidays. Suitable for children up to 9 years old.

2. STORY READING – A CHRISTMAS CAROL

A festive goldfields re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale. The story tells Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation after the supernatural visits the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Daily throughout the holidays. Suitable for all ages.

3. LITTLE RED ROBIN HOOD

Pantomime was a traditional Christmas activity on the goldfields and Little Red Robin Hood is an hilarious mashed-up rendition of the much loved fairy-tales ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Robin Hood’. The two stories have been combined into one play, reinventing the classics in a comical pantomime with a wonderful new Christmas twist. Daily throughout the holidays at 2.15pm. Suitable for all ages.

4. MUSIC OF THE GOLD FIELDS – CHRISTMAS CAROLS

Music lovers are invited to come along and join in on a song as ‘The Welcome Strangers’ teach traditional Christmas Carols. This interactive session will have visitors singing and tapping their toes with Christmas cheer! Daily throughout the holidays at 4.00pm. Suitable for all ages.

5. A MORNING CALL

The infamous Lola Montez first performed this play 150 years ago at the opening of Ballarat’s original Victoria Theatre. A wonderful time-capsule piece which will be enjoyed by people of all ages. To win a bet, Sir Edward Ardent attempts to charm Mrs Chillingtone into breaking her promise never again to marry. However, Mrs Chillingtone has some surprises in store for him. Daily throughout the holidays at 11.15am. Suitable for all ages.

6. STOKED

Stoked is a favourite winter activity for many at Sovereign Hill! Visitors are invited to see the huge and powerful steam engines raging fires in the boilers, feel the heat of the furnace and take home their own piece of crushed quartz that might contain gold. Daily tour (bookings required). Suitable for children aged 4-12 years. Meet at Victoria Theatre.

With a whole host of other activities and tours to delight, Ballarat's famed Sovereign Hill is the place to be these school holidays. Visit the website for further information.
