7. Blue Hawaii at the Coco Palms Resort on the east coast of Kauai

One of the classic Elvis Presley films, adored by generations for its Hawaiian-flavoured storyline and real Hawaiian locations. The famous wedding scene was shot on Kauai at the then premier Kauai hotel, Coco Palms Resort Hotel. Forced to closed after Kauai was hit by Hurricane Iniki in September 1992, the resort is due to reopen in 2017 under the Hyatt banner. You can still see the original coconut grove that the hotel was built on, originally planted in 1896!

8. Lilo & Stitch fictional towns inspired by real Kauai locations

This much-loved Disney Studios animated feature, released in 2002, tells the story of Stitch, an alien experiment designed to wreak havoc wherever he goes, but who escapes to Earth and is adopted by a little Hawaiian girl on Kauai.

Impressed by the beauty of Kauai, the film’s creators decided that the best way to recreate the island visually was to use a technique that had not been employed by Disney Animation in over 60 years – watercolour!

The production team spent weeks in Hawaii studying the geography, buildings, vegetation, and even the way the light falls from the sky at different times of the day. They incorporated real Kauai locations including the bridge to Hanalei, the Kilauea Lighthouse, the Princeville Hotel, and the Na Pali Coast to produce a beautiful family movie that truly captures the spirit of Hawaii.
