Out & About with Kids was the only Australian magazine invited to visit Universal Studios Japan (USJ) for the unveiling of the incredible Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ in 4K3D ride. ELISA ELWIN brings us the flying fabulous fun details and her top three reasons (and a few tips!) to visit Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.
ONE – The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™
Harry Potter fans head to USJ in droves, often bypassing the rest of the park to spend the day in the life size attraction, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, designed specifically for Universal Studios. Through the entrance arch you are magically transported to Hogsmeade Village where you can wander the world finding all your favourites, including Ollivanders wand shop and a mug of delicious and sweet butter beer. You can also fly through the skies on the ride Flight of the Hippogriff™, a family-friendly rollercoaster that swoops and dives past Hagrid’s hut.
TWO – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ in 4K3D
Yes, This ride is what all the fuss is about. USJ is proud to proclaim the ride is now in 4K3D, dramatically hi res, and now in 3D for the first time in the world. The queue for the ride could almost be a ride in itself, wending its way through Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in magical Potter fashion before departing on a thrilling journey. Soar across the vast sky above Hogwarts™ at “apparent” high speeds and experience the thrilling immersive realism as the Golden Snitch™ flitters by as if within arm’s reach. This unrivalled attraction and its magical journey is full of thrills and excitement.
Inside tip – This ride has its scary moments for the younger set and may not suit those who experience motion sickness. Parent waiting and exchange areas are provided so one carer can sit with those family members too young or unable or unwilling to ride and quickly swap over allowing the other parent a fast access on the ride.
THREE – Minions
The mischief-and-mayhem-loving Minions are adored in Japan. Friends and families dressed in matching Minion gear are everywhere and add to the fun of a day at USJ. You can indulge your Minion madness with Minion Mart and in Minion Plaza, which sells – of course – Minion goods! And if that isn’t enough, eat your way through a Minion Chinese steamed bun or popcorn in a Minion shaped bucket.
Here are some top tips to help you get the most out of your visit:
- All the rides and shows are in Japanese. Makes for a totally new twist in Potter speak!
- School holidays and weekends are busy as crowds fill this popular theme park.
- Try and visit during the week and outside peak Japanese holidays to avoid the biggest crowds. Buy an Express Pass, well worth the extra dollars for the hours saved waiting in queues.
