Discover the Kiama Area – A Little Piece of Paradise

Sydney and Canberra pay close attention – if you haven’t heard of the Kiama area, which is just a 90 minute drive south of Sydney, here’s a reminder as to why this little piece of paradise remains a firm favourite for families:

1. Fun-tastic adventures in Kiama

Did you know that the name Kiama has long been translated as ‘where the sea makes a noise’?

Kids will wonder at two very impressive (and noisy) blowholes formed from basalt lava flows 260 million years ago! With a south east swell, head to the lighthouse for the main blowhole, for a north east swell head to the little Blowhole.

At night, why not step outside and look up to enjoy amazing star gazing opportunities, away from city lights.

If zipping or walking through the tree tops is more your thing, then head to Kiama’s Illawarra Fly treetop walk (NSW’s only steel canopy walk) and eco-zipline adventure with stunning panoramic views taking in everything from the rainforest floor out to the Pacific Ocean.

In the warmer months, head to the Jamberoo Action Park – the largest family owned and operated water them park in NSW guaranteed to deliver squeals of delight and hours of family fun.

Or for something completely different outside, head to Jamberoo for a rare chance to try Foot Golf – great for everyone in the family!

You can’t stay in the area without checking out Kiama’s awesome parks and playgrounds (- your kids would never forgive you!).

2. Kiama: a place to unwind, unplug and connect

Let’s face it – we’re all time poor and technology is partially to blame. Spending time together in nature is a fabulous distraction and the perfect canvas for families to paint beautiful memories.

For diverse beachcombing-scapes to explore as a family, the Kiama area exceeds expectations. Want white sandy beaches and space to roam? Head to Kendall’s Beach in Kiama, Werri Beach in Gerringong or Seven Mile Beach in Gerroa – just to name a few. Surfing lessons for the young and young at heart await. For a tucked away Hawaiian-esque pebble beach with grassy picnicking areas? Head to Boneyard.

No need to head overseas if you are looking for stunning turquoise water where the river meets the ocean. Instead, head to Mystics Beach. While you’re there, find a path in the bush behind you and 20 steps later you’re on a sandy beach lining the Minnamurra River – with an entirely a new view!

Minnamurra river is a favourite choice for parents wanting their kids to connect with nature and with each other. Enjoy sports like kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and fishing. The sandy beach offers space to sprawl out, enjoy a picnic and play games with each other.

3. Get ready to enjoy nature at its best in Kiama

Kiama is well-known for its stunning Coastal Walk stretching for 22 kilometers from the mouth of the Minnamurra River south through Kiama to Gerringong’s Werri Beach – keep an eye out for migrating whales! The Walk is set out in stages, so you can do either a little or a lot and it’s easy to select a portion to enjoy with your little ones and take in the gorgeous views all year round.

For those on wheels that enjoy time zipping along on land/terra firma, go cycling one of the many biking paths in the region.

For some inner calm, experience the tranquillity of nature at the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre. Meander along the easy grade wheelchair accessible, lower level trail or continue on the Falls Walk for spectacular views over the rainforest canopy and stunning waterfall.

Barren Grounds Nature Reserve is also a must see for wildflowers (in season), coastline views and the Illawarra Lookout Walk which is 2.6kms

Before you get started on any adventure, make your little ones feel like they are on a mini expedition and download the Kiama checklist for clever kids from their visitor’s guide!
